“‘It is He Who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding stretched out the heavens. When He utters His voice there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and He brings forth the wind from His storehouses.’” (Jeremiah 51:15-16)
As the exile of the Israelites continued, Jeremiah’s messages from God began to shift gears a little. Instead of focusing solely on Israel’s sins, Jeremiah now uttered prophecies against foreign nations, warning of their own impending destruction. One of these nations was Babylon the great, the very empire that had recently conquered Judah. The message was simple: the Babylonians trusted in their false gods, so the LORD would show them what a true God is like.
In line with this point, Jeremiah reminded the hearers of his message about God’s awesome power. It is He Who made the earth, he stated. It is He Who rules over the wind and the sea, Who can create or calm a storm with simply a word. He is wise beyond measure, and the world is His to command. Those who trust in idols are, to put it bluntly, fools. Their gods are dead and powerless; but the God of Israel is alive and able to do all that we need and more.
Even today, God’s power still reigns. He has not changed; His might has not decreased; no one has become more powerful than Him. He is still the only God, the One Who can effect change with a single word. And what’s more, His power doesn’t extend to just nature. He has this same incredible power over us too, over the entire history of the world. We serve a mighty God; there is nothing at all that He cannot do. When we obey Him and live according to His will, He works in us, leading us Himself and helping us do His work. Nothing and no one else can help us in the world; only God is powerful enough.
