I wasn't going to read this book.
I've loved every Nadine Brandes book I've read so far, but this one just didn't seem like my cup of tea. Usually, any book about a virus is a major turn-off for me. (Hearkening back to my hypochondriac days when my biggest fear was contracting scarlet fever...) But after many Instagram posts encouraging readers to look past any potential negative impressions, to give the book a chance, I gave in.
I'm so glad.
Characters: Cain is such a good protagonist. Wow. There was never a moment when he felt forced or unrealistic; everything he does makes perfect sense, even his... dumber decisions. He's an amazing character, and it was a true delight to spend time with him and watch him grow.
I also really liked Stranna. I'd like to know more of her backstory.
Content: There's some violence, with characters being forced to fight in gladiator games and occasionally against vicious beasts in the wild. The spectators of the games are rather bloodthirsty. Characters are killed in brutal ways (though nothing's graphic).
Writing: The writing was incredible, as expected. Brandes has such a special writing style that makes us care deeply about the characters and their experiences. And the Christian elements woven into the story were excellent. It didn't feel preachy, and yet the truth of Christ is proclaimed in a beautiful way. There was one bit of dialogue that nearly provoked tears, as two characters discuss the importance of bringing the news of a cure to those who are dying without it. Wow. What a powerful image of the urgency of the gospel.
Summary: If you too are on the fence about reading this book, I encourage you to try it out. It's a breathtaking adventure that will leave you eager for more, with an ending that feels both satisfying and bittersweet. You will be encouraged, challenged, and inspired. I highly recommend this to readers aged 14+!
