No Fear

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1).

Psalm 27 is an expression of confidence in God. The psalm doesn’t state when it was written, but it does name David as the author. Like most of David’s works, this one takes us into the mind of this great poet-king, giving us a glimpse of his incredible faith.

The opening verse of the psalm could stand entirely on its own. Because God is our light, our salvation, and our stronghold, we have no reason at all to be afraid. David’s enemies trusted in their own strength, considering themselves superior to David. But while that might have been true from a human perspective, they failed to take the all-powerful God into account. Their attacks turned back on their own heads; as David wrote, “When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall” (v.2). God was looking after him, delivering him from harm.

God didn’t do this just because He was in a good mood at that time, though. He brought David out of so many difficulties because David trusted so completely in Him. His heart’s desire was to dwell in God’s house forever, to spend his days learning about Him and worshiping Him. This fierce love delighted God, and He blessed David because of it. The more times God delivered David, the greater David loved Him. People would and did fail him, but God never did. “For my father and my mother have forsaken me,” David wrote, “but the LORD will take me in” (v. 10).

At the end of the day, no matter how many enemies rose up against him, David would still rejoice in God. He loved God, knew God loved him, and had confidence that God would not give him into the hands of the wicked. He didn’t see that deliverance yet, but he knew it would come at the right time. “Wait for the LORD,” he urged his readers; “be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!” (v.14). He is the great Refuge; why should we be afraid of anyone? He’s going to deliver us, if we only wait for Him.
